Enhanced “Take Rate” Census Block Calculations for US Broadband
Newly
published paper describes enhanced methodology to calculate broadband
“Take Rate” at census block resolution strengthening data driven
marketing programs and applications to the American Recovery and
Reinvestment Act (ARRA) BIP and BTOP stimulus funding programs.
Cooperstown, NY (PRWEB)
November 30, 2009 -- Brian Webster Consulting and WirelessMapping.Com
has published a revised methodology for calculating broadband “take
rate” in the United States. Using the enhanced approach described in the
newly released whitepaper, entitled “Current Broadband “Take Rate” in
the U.S.,” the estimate of the national broadband take rate where
broadband services are available stands at 72.9%. When compared to
currently accepted industry estimates, this new approach results in a
10% increase in broadband take rate.
Based on
these higher take rates, it is possible to reevaluate broadband
deployments or expansions to areas that previously may not have been
considered financially sustainable based on low household density per
square mile. More accurate data and the ability to identify exactly
where un-served homes are located leads to better informed deployment
strategies and more effective use of funding to address un-served
households.
“Combining
the enhanced census block broadband take rate with other economic data
and trends as input to return-on-investment models and analysis,” noted
Haig Sarkissian, Principal Consultant at Wireless 20/20, LLC, “builds
additional confidence for investors on the merit of the broadband
deployment business case.”
In August
of 2009, Brian Webster Consulting teamed with data provider Gadberry
Group to design and prototype an approach that provides near address
level provision for broadband consumption and take rates.
“Earlier this year we provided several first round
applicants with block level demographics, including consumer broadband
usage.” said Gadberry Group principal Larry Martin. “Combining these
data with innovative analysis techniques has led to this new perspective
on broadband take rate.”
“By leveraging our years of mapping experience we help
our clients strengthen their business case and go-to-market plans
allowing them to present their cases more clearly with images as well as
with hard data.” Brian Webster, Principal Consultant added. "With the
new insight provided by the census block take rate, business case
analysis is further enhanced thereby reducing the risk in the broadband
investment and deployment.”

calculated down to the census block level. The blocks can be displayed
as "served", "underserved" or "unserved" and categorized as "remote" or
"non-remote", and "rural" or "non-rural" as defined by the NTIA/RUS
Notice of Funds Availability (NOFA). Graphic displays can include the
number of households passed, the percentage of households with access to
broadband and the distances between unserved and already-served markets.
Information is also available in database and spreadsheet format.
Internet service providers can request maps that clearly
show unserved or underserved areas along with calculations to see if
their project area meets the requirements for a BTOP or BIP application.

National Wireless Internet Service Provider (WISP) Mapping Initiative
GERING, NE – February 6, 2009 –
Inventive Media, owner and operator of the WISP Directory website
(http://www.wispdirectory.com), the most comprehensive list of WISPs
(Wireless Internet Service Providers) in the United States, has teamed
up with Brian Webster of Wireless Mapping (http://www.wirelessmapping.com)
to generate coverage maps showing the total coverage areas for WISPs in
the United States.
Brian Webster, owner of Wireless
Mapping, commented, “We have had a huge outpouring of support from
WISP’s who want to provide their network coverage data. This will make
a difference in how the WISP industry is perceived as well as help
establish brand awareness with the consumer for this type of broadband
delivery.” The coverage area for each WISP is converted to a polygon
and added to an interactive Google map available at
http://www.wirelessmapping.com/Google%20Maps3.htm . As of February
6, the map covers over 850,000 square miles.
Entries in the WISP Directory include
zip codes serviced, customer ratings, independent reviews and WISP
Technology used by each WISP. A coverage map showing the total area
serviced by WISP operators will also be provided later in the first
quarter of 2009. The directory currently has over 1700 verified WISP
operators in the United States, and over 180 entries for WISP related
businesses.
Matt Larsen, owner of Inventive Media,
commented, “For several years, there has been little more than anecdotal
evidence of the size and scope of the WISP Industry. Vendors,
consultants, operators and government officials have been looking for
this kind of information for several years. This is the first time this
amount of WISP data has been put together into one public, searchable
directory and onto a single map showing the breadth of national coverage
by independent WISP operators.”
The WISP Directory site also makes it
easier for potential customers to search for WISP operators that can
provide broadband Internet services to their home or business.
“WISP operators serve many
underserviced areas and can provide equivalent or better services than
the telephone or cable companies in those areas. One of the goals of
the WISP Directory is to make the connections between customers who want
to find a service provider and the WISPs who can deliver the service
they want,” said Larsen. “There is an entire industry of independent
WISPs providing service to rural and underserved areas, and providing a
competitive third option for people who are dissatisfied with the telco
or cable Internet providers in their areas. The WISP Directory is here
to help put the WISP Industry on the map and show that there are
alternatives.”
Basic listings in the WISP Directory
are free of charge. The directory is available at
www.wispdirectory.com.

Wirelessmapping.com announces a wireless customer
pre-qualification system.
Wirelessmapping.com announces
the availability of a wireless customer pre-qualification system. This
is designed for fixed wireless and WIMAX operators and their quest to
answer the questions “Do we offer service at this address?” and “Can we
determine this without having to send a truck out to check for signal?”
In conjunction with RF planning and radio coverage mapping,
Wirelessmapping.com can produce a Google EarthÔ
compatible file that will allow a customer service rep or sales person
to input a specific street address and determine if it falls within
their wireless service area. The address query returns a result and
places the location on the Google EarthÔ
map with the radio coverage in the background. If the location falls
within the wireless network coverage area, the customer service rep can
simply schedule the installation. All of this can be completed on the
initial phone call.
This was
created in response to network operators asking if there was a simple
and affordable way for someone to call in and inquire about availability
of service at their location. While Wirelessmapping.com has always been
able to generate accurate coverage maps for a carrier, it was not until
now that they could make this coverage available in an interactive
universal format. Being able to pan and zoom maps to a particular
address greatly reduces the need for truck rolls to a potential customer
location. Wireless operators who have been using the service claim they
have been able to double their daily installation rates.
In addition
to the Google EarthÔ file,
their data services group can process existing customer databases or
purchased business and residential address lists and run them through a
process to identify the actual customers that fall within the wireless
coverage area. This allows for a direct market campaign to the people or
locations where the network operator can reach. Additionally, this
service can be used while investigating new expansion sites or
evaluating existing networks for market potential.

Wirelessmapping.com announces a
wireless broadband demographic reporting service.
Wirelessmapping.com is pleased to announce their new wireless
demographic reporting service. Geared towards the wireless
broadband industry it is now possible to complete comprehensive site
market studies before construction. The process involves completing a
radio coverage prediction, which determines the geographic area from
which to extract data. Once a coverage map has been produced, a
demographic report is completed that determines the population and
number of households within the footprint of the wireless site.
This system was created in
response to requests from many small Wireless Internet Service
Providers (WISP’s). Most start-up and existing operators have well
thought out business plans but they were usually lacking actual market
demographics as they relate to their proposed network. Generalized
demographic data has always been easily accessible, but it doesn’t
address the population and number of households that fall within the
footprint of a particular wireless base station. This is the information
that can be provided in the reports from Wirelessmapping.com. Once this
data is known, a WISP owner can plug the information in to their
business model to determine if the site will be financially viable. As
an additional benefit, the report will also show the zip codes that fall
within the footprint. If the site proceeds to the construction phase,
the zip code list could be used in a direct mail campaign.

Wirelessmapping.com Appointed as a
Motorola Canopy Ô Affiliate
Solutions Provider
Wirelessmapping.com is pleased to announce they have been appointed a
Motorola Canopy Ô Affiliate
Solutions Provider. Motorola created this program to highlight products
and services that enhance their Wireless Broadband Internet Platform.
As a solutions provider, Wirelessmapping.com provides Radio Frequency
engineering services to wireless broadband service companies. Our
main product is a network coverage map, which shows the
projected range of the wireless network. These maps and studies show the
effects of transmitter height, location and equipment selection. In
addition to the mapping service, we produce point-to-point radio path
studies and demographic reports. The demographic reports focus on
the specific area that the transmitters cover, this includes tallies of
the number of households and population reached by the system. All of
this information can be gathered prior to site construction and is
essential in business model planning and revenue projections.

Wirelessmapping.com announces a
wireless service area map server system.
Wirelessmapping.com announces
the availability of a wireless service area interactive mapping
system. This system is designed for wireless broadband system
operators and their quest to answer the question “Do you offer service
at my location?” In conjunction with our radio coverage mapping
services, Wirelessmapping.com can now produce a web based system
that will allow a customer service rep or sales person to input a
specific street address and determine if it falls within their
wireless broadband service area. The address query returns a result
and places the location on a street level map with the radio coverage in
the background. Three possible results are shown, Green for good
coverage, Yellow where there is coverage but will require field
verification or white where there is no service.
The map
server was created in response to network operators asking if there
was a simple and affordable way for someone to call in and inquire about
availability of service at their location. While Wirelessmapping.com has
always been able to generate accurate coverage maps for a
carrier, it was not until now that they could make this coverage
available in an interactive web browser format. Being able to pan and
zoom maps to a particular address greatly reduces the need for truck
rolls to a potential customer location.
In addition
to the map server, their data services group can take your existing
customer database or other lists and run them through the server to
identify customers that fall within the wireless coverage area. This
will allow you to directly market to the people or locations where you
offer the service. Additionally, this service can be used while
investigating new expansion sites.
